TESTED: ASICS Trabuco 12 GORE-TEX

My 3rd Pair — and Still My Favorite

This is actually my third pair of ASICS Trabuco, and every version has accompanied me on different parts of the world — from coastal trails to alpine ridges. What keeps me coming back is the reliability, fit, and comfort that ASICS has consistently delivered with the Trabuco line.

The Trabuco 12 GORE-TEX builds on everything I loved in the previous models — better grip, more comfort, and smarter waterproofing. It’s the kind of shoe you grow to trust. If you’ve ever had a pair of trail shoes you didn’t want to take off after a hike, you’ll know exactly what I mean.

This isn't just a review — it’s a long-term endorsement.

First Impressions

Straight out of the box, the Trabuco 12 GORE-TEX feels solid yet surprisingly lightweight for a waterproof trail shoe. The updated mesh upper offers a snug fit, and the rock plate embedded in the midsole inspires confidence from the first step. The heel cup holds the foot firmly without pressure, and the cushioning feels responsive without being mushy.

This is not your average hiking shoe — it’s engineered for fast hikers and technical trail runners who need protection without the bulk.

Performance in the French Alps

During a 3-day trek in the Haute-Savoie region, the Trabuco 12 GTX was put to the test in wet snow, muddy switchbacks, and rocky scree. Not once did water seep through, even after hours on melting snow.

The outsole’s ASICSGRIP™ rubber performed exceptionally well — even better than some full hiking boots we’ve tested. It handled wet roots and sharp rocks with ease, offering reliable traction and solid control on the descents.

Bonus points for the energy-saving GUIDANCE LINE® technology: after 15+ km days, our legs felt less taxed, especially on long downhill sections.

Heat-Tested in Cape Verde

In the islands of Fogo and Santo Antão, the terrain was dry, dusty, and brutally technical. While GORE-TEX shoes often overheat in warm climates, the Trabuco 12 GTX stayed breathable. This is likely due to the open mesh structure in the upper and well-designed ventilation points.

We clocked over 40 miles in just 3 days under intense sun. No blisters. No overheating. No mid-hike regrets. That’s rare in a waterproof shoe.
